About Me!

Scott Benedict

I have over 10 years of high-school teaching experience, predominantly using comprehensible input and another 10 years teaching middle school in the IB Middle Years Programme.

During this time, I've developed a proficiency-based grading and assessment system where students' abilities align with their achievement levels by integrating standards-based grades and assessments.

My dedication to assessment and learning drives me to continually refine this system, crafting effective rubrics and assessments that accurately measure student proficiency using a combination of formative and summative assessments.

In addition to teaching, I am an educational consultant and workshop presenter.

I have delivered presentations for the language departments of Minneapolis Public Schools, Norfolk Public Schools, and Clark County School District, as well as at SWCOLT and numerous NTPRS® Conferences. My workshops focus on comprehensible-input methods, including TPRS®, classroom management, building student relationships, and effective assessment and grading practices.

I am always seeking new challenges where I can be creative in the classroom and further develop my teaching skills and my grading system based on academic standards.

I prioritize building strong relationships with my students while immersing them in the target language.

By creating a supportive and language-rich environment, my students begin to speak, write, and tell stories in the language within their first year of instruction.

It's not uncommon for my students to write over a hundred words or speak freely in the target language by the end of the year.

Traditional grading systems often fail to accurately reflect student abilities, which led me to develop my profifiency-based system. This standards-based approach ensures that grades more accurately represent students' proficiency levels. By clearly identifying strengths and weaknesses, it allows for targeted, differentiated instruction on an individual, small group, class, or level basis.

My passion for teaching extends beyond my classroom. I present workshops and seminars, and consult with schools and districts on comprehensible-input methods, the implementation of my profificiency-based grading system, classroom management, and building student relationships.

I've shared my expertise across the United States, Ereuop and in Mexico, inspiring educators to enhance their language teaching practices.

I look forward to discussing potential teaching, inservice, workshop, presentation, or keynote opportunities at your school, organization, or district. Please contact me!

What people had to say...

I would like to thank you for running your class in a manor that is both fun and educational. Alex loves it. He is challenging himself to earn an A+ in your class… You are doing a great job. Thank you for caring and taking the time to engage my son in your class. I appreciate it very much.

I just wanted to take a minute and thank you again for all that you did for Tommy last year. You must have really touched him because he was very pleased to tell both Sue and me that you had an open door for him to come back if he needed help or even just had a question.

Thanks for being such a great teacher overall. Your lesson plans and teaching methods have been the best way to direct me toward my goals–speaking and writing Spanish fluently. Next year, I’ll take these skills to Spanish 3 and I will be well equipped and ready to take on any task they give me. Thanks again, and have a great summer=-)

I meant to email you much earlier in the year, but I am just sending this to say thanx. I am now attending San Diego State University, and I am an International business major on my way to either a minor or major in Spanish. Because of your teachings I have excelled in spanish remarkably and catch on to all the things that the teacher talks about much easier than my fellow peers. I also want to thank you not just for teaching me Spanish though, but the value of responsibility and the meaning of deadlines. I know it sounds weird but I am actually punctual now. Once again thank you for all that you have done for me and my fellow classmates at Arcadia High. You are truly an amazing teacher.
